At /build 2023, CTO and EVP of AI Kevin Scott laid out the “Copilot Stack” with AI orchestration at the center. Semantic Kernel is Microsoft’s open-source offering to develop and design copilots — by making it easy to create plugins, orchestrate them within plans, and to generally make it easier for the new “AI developer” to adopt the latest in AI innovations into their apps, services, and most ambitious features. This presentation will cover the genesis of Semantic Kernel as an incubation led by Microsoft Deputy CTO Sam Schillace — of Google Docs fame — that began in the middle of 2022 with his early access to GPT4, all the way through to the open source release of Semantic Kernel in March 2023 and to where Semantic Kernel is heading right now.

You will learn:

  • Get familiar with the Microsoft copilot stack
  • Develop AI features quickly with Semantic Kernel (SK) as the AI orchestrator
  • Be frankly informed about the strengths and weaknesses of SK
  • Learn how to contribute to the development of this open-source project
