Microsoft Teams is a workspace built on Office 365 - think of it as an app. Groups, calendars, chat, messaging, plans and tasks, video conferencing - all these elements of Microsoft 365 brought together in a single app surface that allows teams to work together without having to switch context between different applications.

We can use Microsoft Teams extensions to build on top of this and add our own UI using a number of extension points, and specifically we can now use the power of the SharePoint Framework to build tabs in Teams and use our existing skills to give users access to their data in Microsoft 365 right inside Teams. We can also use Teams tabs in SharePoint, effectively giving us a new provider-hosted extension model. These new development options open up endless possibilities for building solutions tailored to industries or organizations.
