There are many drivers for business and IT stakeholders to want to migrate their application systems to the cloud, such as not wanting to own/operate hardware, cost savings, business agility, and so on. Once the decision is made, it falls on delivery teams to make that vision a reality.

In this workshop, we will talk about:

• What kinds of applications, systems, and components do and do not migrate well
• Defining what makes a successful migration: metrics, goals, and risks
• Common patterns and techniques
• Dealing with the inevitable need for hybrid scenarios

The workshop will feature lots of demos, real-world case studies, and will focus on the practical mechanics of moving all or part of a portfolio to the cloud, whether it be in the data center, one of the public clouds using IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS, or on-to one of the popular container systems such as Kubernetes or Pivotal Cloud Foundry, or some mix of those.

There is a broad continuum of what it means to be cloud-ready, from just functioning in a cloud to being able to leverage the cloud's advantages and architecture -- e.g., being cloud native.

Among other things, you will learn:

• The 12-Factor app and other considerations for application migration and modernization
• Alternatives and techniques for modernization and migration (M+M) along with considerations for each
• How to tell if an application is ill-suited for the cloud
